Early Morning Passenger Train Derailment Near Valigonda (Andhra Pradesh) on Saturday, October 29, 2005 Causes Many Fatalities

Repalle-Secunderabad fast passenger train derails during the early morning hours on October 29, 2005 in the Nadikudi-Bibinagar region of the South Central Railway, and causes many fatalities.

The early reports indicate that the train derailment occurred at or around 4:15 am on Saturday, October 29, 2005 near the town of Valigonda, AP.

Apparently, the tracks were washed away by the flood water runoff caused by the heavy rains that has drenched the region during the past few days.

Considering that there are between 7 to 9 (out of 15) coaches that are still submerged underwater, the exact number of fatalities is not yet known. Survivors and injurred passengers are being ferried away to safety via buses, and vans. A special medical/rescue train has also been pressed into service. Rescue workers and resources from Nalgonda, Miryalaguda, Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Guntur, Vijayawada, and other surrounding locations are being pulled together to aid in the rescue effort.
